Listen up students – your local police need you!

Loads of dwelling burglaries have been carried out on student houses and flats in the town.

The majority of these crimes are taking place because communal areas and front doors are left unlocked.

Police in Bournemouth are calling on you, the students, to carry out some simple crime prevention steps to make life harder for burglars operating in the area.

Detective Constable Adam Woolman said: “Every year burglars target student properties in Bournemouth because many are left insecure.

“Items stolen in the recent spate have included laptops, iPads, mobile phones and even coursework on memory sticks and hard drives”

“All we are asking is for students to make sure their property is secure when the last person leaves. Don’t make life easy for these crooks – make a note of your serial numbers and passwords”

“Has your laptop/tablet got a tracking app on it to help locate it if stolen?”

To lower the chances of becoming a victim of burglary, remember the following home security advice:

  • If you live in a block of flats that has a communal entrance, lock it when you leave and after you enter the block
  • Always lock the front door and any windows
  • Never let anyone you don’t know through a communal door
  • Do not grant entry to people via an entry phone system, if you do not know them
  • Remove keys from windows and doors and keep them near but out of vie in case of fire
  • Do not leave valuables in view of ground-floor windows or external doors

Calling all students!

bu-logoDid you know that the University has its own Letting Service?

BU Lettings are part of the University and can offer you the lowest admin costs in Bournemouth (that we are aware of) this also includes a personal possessions insurance policy within our fee. Over the last 6 years we have built up an excellent reputation and can now offer a number of varied properties for your continuing years of study. We work very closely with SUBU and are their sole recommended Letting Service which is something that we are extremely proud of.

You may have noticed that students are looking for housing for 2014/15 so maybe now is the time to start your search. Please don’t believe the rumours that all the best houses go first because although we have been advertising our properties from the start of the year there are still plenty of houses left for you to choose from. We do however encourage you to do your research and it is worth looking at what fees you will be charged by each of the agents as these do vary quite considerably.

The BU Letting Service will be happy to answer any questions you may have about renting accommodation in the private sector. When the time is right we can book you viewings for the houses that you have an interest in. We will take you to see these properties and when you find a house you like we will go through all of the paperwork with you. A University staff member has seen all of the houses that we are advertising and therefore you can be assured that if we know of any continued issues with them we wouldn’t be advertising them! And remember, the fees we charge are the lowest we would expect you to find when compared to our competition.

We have an office based in Melbury House on Lansdowne Campus so you are free to come in and see us or you can check out our website, like our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter.

We wish you luck with your continued studies and look forward to helping you find next year’s accommodation.

BU students in The Guardian on deciding where to study

A Bournemouth University student suggested in The Guardian that people need to go and visit their prospective universities in person, before they make the final decision on where they will study.

Charlotte Humphrey, 20, who has just finished her second year at Bournemouth University said, “Pictures can’t show the Uni vibe. I remember going to the Bournemouth open day and thinking, wow! I loved the atmosphere, the hustle and bustle, the canteens, the coffee shops. And seeing the halls is definitely better in person than in the pictures, which will make them look better than they really are.”

The article titled ‘Get a taste of your new home’, discusses the importance of students making the trip to see as many institutions as possible. This is because getting the feeling a university is right for someone cannot be found by only looking on university websites and browsing the internet.

This is highlighted further in a second Guardian in the article titled ‘Online opinion; Get insider knowledge on your uni choices via Facebook and Twitter’, where a comparison is made between choosing a university and buying a holiday. The article states “when you book a holiday, you don’t just look on the hotels website, so why do the same when looking for a university course”. The article goes on to say how social media sites are a great way of finding out about universities from a student perspective.

Patricia Obawole, in her second year of a Law degree at Bournemouth University added to the article by recommending The Student Room (thestudentroom.co.uk). “It’s a forum that allows you to ask any question, from things about specific universities and being a student, to how everyone else found the exam you took. I’d advise you use it to check out the accommodation.”

BU student Halls of Residence re-open after £8million transformation

Featured

A Bournemouth University Halls of Residence has re-opened following a multi-million pound refurbishment.

Cranborne House, situated in St Paul’s Place near Lansdowne, has been completely transformed during the year-long, £8.3 million project.

All of the 497 bedrooms and bathrooms have received a makeover, while all 76 living rooms and kitchens have been refitted.

A new common room has been created with a large TV and table football, and an external social space has also been provided with seating and a brick barbeque.

Wireless internet has also been installed in the 15-year-old building, and students will be able to use wireless technology to check whether washing machines in the Halls’ laundrette are free.

Professor John Vinney, Vice-Chancellor of Bournemouth University, said: “It has been transformed from a building that has taken 15 years’ worth of student activity and use to a beautiful building that will accommodate over 500 students over term-time.

“It’s an essential part of the experience at BU. Student experience is absolutely key and it is delightful to see the building and the way it has been transformed.”

Cranborne House was closed while the work was carried out, but will be home to around 500 first year and postgraduate students from mid-September.

It is made up of six and seven bedroom cluster flats, all with en-suite shower rooms, and a number of self-contained studio flats.
