Support Earth Day and join over a Billion people pledging to be Green!

Earth Day Image (2)Earth Day takes place on 22 April every year and this year is its 45th Anniversary. This could be the most exciting year in environmental history, the year in which economic growth and sustainability join hands. It’s our turn to lead. So our world leaders can follow by example.

So we’re asking everyone at BU to make a pledge to be a little greener. Your pledge could be work related, or personal. Big or small. If everyone makes a pledge to be greener then collectively we can make a real difference.

You could also win some cool prizes to help you be even more green! You could win prizes such as Solar Chargers; Solar Radios; Recycled Glasses; Powerdown plugs; reusable coffee cups; and recycled coasters.

Did you know that BU runs a number of sustainability initiatives? We’ve got lots of sustainable travel initiatives from liftshare, BU by Bike, and Bus for BU. We’re also a Fairtrade University. We recycle 70% of our waste on campus……..which is super simple….EVERYTHING except food and drink can go in the green-lidded bins! And the new Student Centre is our greenest building yet, with grass roofs, Solar PV Panels, ground-source heat pumps for heating and cooling, low energy lighting, and water saving features in the WC’s.

Interdisciplinary Research Week 2015: 11-15 May

This week-long event includes a programme of lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and a film, all aimed at showcasing some of the fantastic research being undertaken at the university.

Bournemouth University is proud to be at the centre of a network of educational, business and local government partners who form a powerful team dedicated to world-class research. Together we create a rewarding exchange of knowledge that stimulates new ideas to examine important societal issues across the globe. Our innovative integration of perspectives from the arts, humanities and social sciences, along with methods drawn from computer science, engineering or the physical sciences, puts us at the forefront of developing new advanced strategies and technologies.

SUBU’s March Update

subu-logo-2015The past few weeks have been a very busy month for SUBU, not least with the opening of the Student Centre at Talbot Campus and the Engine Room in the Old Fire Station at Lansdowne.

The team of full-time officers have implemented new activities and initiatives with success, including:

Refresher’s Fair: New societies were launched and existing clubs saw more sign-ups

RepFest: 50 student reps got involved with this training event

GOAT team: The plans for the Go Out and Talk team are established and the pilot is ready to launch

New student forums: Some new forums have been created just for students who are the first in their family to attend university

One World Day: 21 cultures from across the world presenting to over 150 students

Addressing Lad Culture: A BU-wide group has been established to support the development of  campaigns to empower students to challenge ‘lad culture’ on and off campus

HSS Placement Support: New video planned to provide support for students on professional course placements

Work on community projects with the BU Dorset Shrievalty Award

HighSheriffcoatofarmsTogether with the High Sheriff of Dorset, BU is offering a small group of students the opportunity to work on a range of important community projects in Dorset during the next academic year.

Successful applicants will work on projects from July 2015 to April 2016. Previous projects have included:

  • Assisting the Safewise Safety Centre
  • Supporting the Safe Bus service
  • Supporting the Nightclub Scene service
  • Supporting the BU night club Chaplaincy service
  • Supporting local youth and other organisations.

By taking a lead on elements of these projects, you’ll be able to make a real difference to people’s lives while also developing your employability, collaborative working, problem-solving skills and more – such as taking advantage of potential networking opportunities.

Aisha Chesshire, Joshua Freeland and Preslava Ivanova, who all took part in the BU Dorset Shrievalty Award last year said: “We’re proud to have been involved in this important community work and look forward to utilising the skills we have gained in our future careers.”

If you’re shortlisted you’ll be invited to an interview in June with Ian Jones, BU’s Head of Regional Community Partnerships. The successful applicants will start work in July 2014 until April 2016.

Law courses and the Faculty of Media & Communication

bu-logoAs the new faculty structure takes shape across BU, the discipline of Law will be integrated into the Faculty of Media & Communication, shifting its home from what used to be the Business School.

In a recent discussion to explain the process to Law students, Stephen Jukes, Dean of the Faculty of Media & Communication students said: “There are no plans to change any of the existing courses or jeopardise your study. Far from it, and to ensure that no boats are rocked, it has been agreed that students graduating this year will remain part of the Business School”.

Stephen continued to say: “The intention is to add to the richness of both Law and Media, drawing on Law’s international reputation for work in the areas of Human Rights and Intellectual Property. Human Rights fits extremely well with traditional Media subjects such as Journalism or Politics. Intellectual Property is absolutely crucial for anyone wanting to work in Media, managing for example sports rights, or working in the increasingly complex social media environment. At the same time, we very much want to boost Law’s national and international profile and invest in the discipline. We would love to bring Law and Media students together in joint projects where the various strands can come together – one idea is to set up a “moot court” and all suggestions are very welcome.”

As the discipline of Law embeds into the new Faculty, there may be development of new courses such as combined degree linking, for example, linking Law with Politics and History. But those plans are for the future and as Stephen puts it “please be reassured that no-one is going to mess with the degree course you are currently on!”.

Easter vacation opening hours for the BU Careers & Employability Service

easterThe Careers & Employability Service will be open over the Easter Vacation.

You will be able to make appointments to speak with a careers advisor and you can visit the Edge Student Development Centre (outside the library) as follows:-

  • Monday 30 March – Thursday 2 April – 9am – 4.30pm
  • Friday 3 April – Monday 6 April – Closed
  • Tuesday 7 April – Friday 10 April – 9am – 4.30pm
  • Monday 13 – Friday 17 April – 9am – 4.30pm

Easter Vacation Bus Services

bu-bus-2The Bus for BU vacation service will run from Monday 30 March.

The U1 service will be running a vacation timetable between the Lansdowne and Talbot Campuses, with buses running every 30 minutes. Please be aware that the services from the Talbot Campus to the Lansdowne Campus will be diverting at Cemetery Junction for Dorchester House, before heading to the Lansdowne Campus.

The U3 service will be running a skeleton vacation service.

The U2, and U4 services will not be running during the vacation period. The BU key card can be used on the M1, M2 and 15 services. The 13 and 14 more bus services are also available through the BU key card.

Improvements to the University Bus Service

From Monday April 20 the following improvements are being introduced to the University bus service in response to student feedback:

U1 Service:

An enhanced term time service comprising of the following additional services:

From the Lansdowne Campus:

  • 8:47am (departing Cranborne House not Dorchester House)
  • 9:43am (departing Dorchester House)
  • 10:43am (departing Dorchester House)

From Talbot Campus:

  • 9:25am (departing Fern Barrow)
  • 10:25am (departing Fern Barrow)

U2 Service:

The U2 service will operate an enhanced level of service from 3:40pm to 7:00pm, where the frequency of service will increase to every 30 minutes.

Updated online timetables for the enhanced U1 and U2 services will be available on the Bus at BU from March 30 or you can download the U1-U2-timetable-changes PDF.

Student Centre Now Open

student-centreThe new £10.5 million Student Centre has opened at Talbot Campus.

The six-storey building contains a range of social and collaborative learning space – including beach hut techno-booths – and bookable meeting rooms, as well as catering facilities and access points for student services.

It is also the new home of the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) – containing the SUBU offices, student advice centre and activities hub, and new radio studios and space for Nerve* student media.

Jim Andrews, BU Chief Operating Officer, said: “We’ve spent the best part of the last 18 months developing this building and engaging with students around what needs to go in here. It’s just really exciting now for everybody to be able to come through the doors and have a look around.

“It offers students a number of things – there are more café points, more meeting points, and greater access to our amazing students’ union – who are much more visible here than they were in the small offices that they’ve had in the past.”

The building is primarily designed as a hub for students to meet informally for study-related activities, for clubs and societies, and for social purposes.

It also features a glazed walkway providing direct access to the library, and windows which look out onto the sportBU sports hall.

SUBU President Chloe Schendel-Wilson said: “It’s really nice and it’s so exciting.

“It’s a really good way for BU to show students that there’s somewhere they can just hang out and treat like their own.

“It has also made SUBU more visible and accessible, so it is much easier to approach us and easier when you’re walking around to see what’s going on and get involved.”

The Student Centre is the first entirely new building on Talbot Campus for ten years, and is the most carbon efficient building on campus, with a number of green credentials to enable it to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Jim Andrews said: “We’ve done lots of work over the last few years internally within different buildings, but this is the first new build for ten years.

“I think for me what it does is it sets a new standard for how we want the space to look and feel across Bournemouth University.”

Work is currently underway to create a new academic building on Talbot Campus, due to open in September 2016, and the Bournemouth University International College in Lansdowne – a partnership with Kaplan International to provide an integrated experience for international students undertaking preparatory programmes.

The Student Centre is open from 8am until 10pm daily, including all weekends other than the university’s Christmas closure.
