Time capsule – your ideas needed!

To celebrate your fantastic new Student Centre, an official opening ceremony is being held in May. To commemorate the occasion, a time capsule will be placed within the stairwell on the ground floor – and will remain locked until 2065.

When students and staff open the capsule in 50 years’ time, we want them to know what life was like for students in 2015, and we want your ideas on what should be included.

The top three ideas will be placed in the capsule and the winners invited to the ceremony.

To send in your ideas, by Monday 11 May, Tweet @Bournemouthuni, comment on our Facebook page, or post an image on our Instagram page using #BUtimecapsule.

Student Centre Now Open

student-centreThe new £10.5 million Student Centre has opened at Talbot Campus.

The six-storey building contains a range of social and collaborative learning space – including beach hut techno-booths – and bookable meeting rooms, as well as catering facilities and access points for student services.

It is also the new home of the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) – containing the SUBU offices, student advice centre and activities hub, and new radio studios and space for Nerve* student media.

Jim Andrews, BU Chief Operating Officer, said: “We’ve spent the best part of the last 18 months developing this building and engaging with students around what needs to go in here. It’s just really exciting now for everybody to be able to come through the doors and have a look around.

“It offers students a number of things – there are more café points, more meeting points, and greater access to our amazing students’ union – who are much more visible here than they were in the small offices that they’ve had in the past.”

The building is primarily designed as a hub for students to meet informally for study-related activities, for clubs and societies, and for social purposes.

It also features a glazed walkway providing direct access to the library, and windows which look out onto the sportBU sports hall.

SUBU President Chloe Schendel-Wilson said: “It’s really nice and it’s so exciting.

“It’s a really good way for BU to show students that there’s somewhere they can just hang out and treat like their own.

“It has also made SUBU more visible and accessible, so it is much easier to approach us and easier when you’re walking around to see what’s going on and get involved.”

The Student Centre is the first entirely new building on Talbot Campus for ten years, and is the most carbon efficient building on campus, with a number of green credentials to enable it to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Jim Andrews said: “We’ve done lots of work over the last few years internally within different buildings, but this is the first new build for ten years.

“I think for me what it does is it sets a new standard for how we want the space to look and feel across Bournemouth University.”

Work is currently underway to create a new academic building on Talbot Campus, due to open in September 2016, and the Bournemouth University International College in Lansdowne – a partnership with Kaplan International to provide an integrated experience for international students undertaking preparatory programmes.

The Student Centre is open from 8am until 10pm daily, including all weekends other than the university’s Christmas closure.

It will also feature social learning spaces, access points for student support services and a café.

Mr Walter also met with BU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor John Vinney and other members of the university’s executive team, to learn more about the work taking place at BU.

He said: “Bournemouth University has gone from strength to strength since it was established just over 20 years ago, and now has a well-deserved reputation for research, innovation and, perhaps most importantly, getting its graduates into work.

“BU obviously has an important role in the county’s economic and cultural life and has, I know, recently played a significant part in the development of Dorset LEP’s Strategic Economic Plan.”

BU’s new Student Centre reaches its highest point.

A topping out ceremony has marked a significant stage in the construction of Bournemouth University’s new state-of-the-art Student Centre.

Construction has now reached the highest point of the six-storey, £10.5 million building’s structure, which be a focal point for students at BU, providing additional space for learning and student support, and a new home to the Students’ Union at BU (SUBU).

The ceremony, which took place at the Talbot Campus, was led by Neal Stephens, the managing director of Willmott Dixon – the constructors of the Student Centre.

Also attending were Councillor Phillip Eades the Mayor of Poole, Rt. Hon. the Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, the University’s Chancellor, Sue Sutherland OBE the chair of the Bournemouth University board, Professor John Vinney, Vice-Chancellor of Bournemouth University, among other partners, dignitaries, staff and students.

Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers said at the ceremony: “This building is going to be the centre of students’ extra-curricular activities. These are an essential part of the education in its widest sense that any good university should provide for its students. Education is not just about acquiring knowledge. It involves learning about oneself, developing as a caring person, and integrating responsibly in society. A building such as this provides the ideal environment for the activities and interrelationship that will result in students leaving this university educated in this wider sense.”

Professor John Vinney, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, said: “We are committed to providing world-class facilities for our students and the Student Centre will provide just that.

“It’s vital we continue to attract high-calibre students and staff for years to come in an increasingly competitive market. We want to provide world-class facilities for a world-class performance.

“The Student Centre, and our plans for a new academic building, will go a long way to achieving that and we are very excited about the progress we are making.

“The University contributes £378 million every year to the regional economy through all our activities.

“This will only be maintained and grow whilst students continue to choose to study at Bournemouth and investing in facilities such as this new Student Centre is central to this.”

Neal Stephens, managing director of Willmott Dixon in south West, said: “We’re delighted to have been selected to carry out this project and it’s fantastic to see this outstanding structure reach its highest point.

“Willmott Dixon is already a major contributor to the local economy and we are delighted to be working on the biggest project in the area. We have established a great relationship with Bournemouth University and are fortunate that our client shares our environmental and sustainable approach.

“We are focused on delivering great quality facilities and have worked hard to be as cost effective and sustainable as possible. In particular, we’ve sunk boreholes into the ground to extract heat, which will save a considerable amount of money on heating in the future. In addition we have also diverted 99.7% of waste from landfill”.

The progress of the Student Centre comes as Bournemouth University also prepares to submit a planning application for a new flagship academic building at the heart of its Talbot Campus.

The Student Centre building has achieved a BREEAM excellent classification in its design stage and is due for completion during November 2014.

Its two-year construction is bringing a direct spend of £6 million into the local economy.

Willmott Dixon has also been awarded the contract to build a new performing arts centre and supporting classrooms at Bournemouth & Poole College.

BU keeps getting better!

Following hot on the heels of the new Student Centre, we are delighted to announce our plans for a new four storey academic building at the heart of Talbot Campus.

Our vision, BU2018, is focused on creating world-class facilities for our students and staff and this project will deliver just that.

We would love to hear your views and will shortly be commencing a six week consultation process including an exhibition on campus.

Further information on this exciting new development is available on the website.

Record year for BU with NSS results

Featured

Student satisfaction at Bournemouth University in the National Student Survey (NSS) has reached its highest level since the survey started in 2005.

Our overall satisfaction rose to 80 per cent – an improvement of 1 per cent on the previous year.

Our overall results showed improvements in all areas, including organisation and management, and academic support and teaching, except personal development which remained constant.

Satisfaction levels in learning resources showed a significant improvement of 6 per cent to 83 per cent.

School successes included overall satisfaction improvements for Tourism, Media, DEC and Applied Sciences.

Tim McIntyre-Bhatty, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of BU, commented: “We are very pleased that we are continuing to see an overall rise in levels of student satisfaction at BU to this record level.

“However, the sector average also improved 1 per cent to 86 per cent, so we appreciate that there is still work to be done and that is why we are committed to improving the whole student experience at BU.

“This includes investment of £10.5 million in the student centre which will become the new home of the Students’ Union (SUBU).”
