Black History Month 2015

October highlights Black History Month which celebrates the contribution black people have made to UK society.

BU, in collaboration with a host of other local organisations, has created a programme of events for students to enjoy, taking place both on and off campus.

Events being hosted by BU include:

Wednesday 14 October: Black History Month Soiree – Racial and Ethnic Diversity and Equality in Sport and Classical Music Race

Black History Month Soiree is co-hosted by BU Equality and Diversity and Black British Academics.

This evening includes a number of speakers:

Humour as Defence: Black Coaches, Micro-aggressions and Racism – Professor Kevin Hylton
Heroines of Opera: Democratising the Art of Opera Writing and Performance – Dr Shirley Thompson
Anti-racism in British Football – Bournemouth Kick-it-out Group
Pedagogies of social justice and cultural democracy – Dr Deborah Gabriel and Aisha Richards

Thursday 29 October: Race Relations Act 50 Years on, with Baroness Lawrence

Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon OBE is an anti-racism campaigner and Labour peer. Last year she was named the most powerful woman in the country in a list drawn up for BBC Woman’s Hour.

An advocate for justice, Baroness Lawrence has been effective in the change of laws in the UK. She will provide a personal perspective on her experiences, whilst reflecting on changes to UK Relations legislation over the last 50 years, focusing on the arrival of the Windrush and changes to several Race Relations Acts throughout the years.

Something for everyone at BU’s Festival of Learning this June

Fancy going on a kitchen safari to see what bacteria lurk in your food? How about unleashing your inner monkey, uncovering the history that lies beneath Hengistbury Head, or finding out how best to market your business?

These are just some of the 150+ free events being held by Bournemouth University as part of its 2014 Festival of Learning.

It runs from Monday 9 to Sunday 15 June and is open to staff, students and members of the public – with events taking place at the university’s Talbot and Lansdowne campuses, and locations across Dorset.

Different events will run throughout the day and evening, and range from interactive workshops and hands-on taster sessions to presentations and seminars.

For the brave among you, there will even be a chance to try some unusual foodstuffs – including insects and super-hot chillis.

The Festival of Learning is now in its second year, and BU’s Vice-Chancellor Professor John Vinney hopes it will be even bigger and better than before.

“Last year we had over 4,000 local people joining us to find out more about our research and how it can impact their lives and the lives of those around the world,” he said.

“Whether you’re part of a business, interested in the latest technological developments, looking for something different to do with the family, or are simply inspired by learning new things, there’s something for everyone.”

The events focus around several exciting themes – including Food and Drink, Professional Development, and Secret Dorset – with activities looking at a range of diverse subjects, covering everything from health and nutrition to business accounting and finance, and the technology of tomorrow.

There are also live labs running on campus throughout the week, giving people the chance to experience first-hand the work and research taking place at the university – from testing to see if you are a super-recogniser to understanding the physical reactions people have playing video games.

With everything from children’s animation workshops to an introduction to the stock market on offer – there’s something for all ages and interests.

New feature for iBU

We are delighted to announce the launch of a new feature on iBU, allowing students to keep up to date with the latest news and events from all areas of the university.
The ‘News and Events’ feature allows students to choose where they would like to receive the latest updates from, ranging from the university website, to Youtube, Twitter and even Facebook!
Students need to simply update the app using the bottom menu option and then add the feeds that they would like to subscribe to.
iBU now has over 13,200 downloads, and is constantly developing to bring the best services to students.
iBU is available as a native app on iOS, Android and Blackberry devices, and is also available in a HTML web version for internet enabled phones or PCs.
