Eating Disorders Awareness Week

Monday, 22 February to Friday, 26 February 2016

In support of Eating Disorders Awareness Week – 22 to 26 February – BU is working in close partnership with local organisations, to host a series of informative events.

The events will include a comedy gig, lectures from professionals, as well as discussions led by people with personal experience of having, and recovering, from an eating disorder.

Events need to be booked through Eventbrite and are open to staff, students and the wider community. For full information and to book onto any of the events, please see the details below.

Tuesday 23 February

Sport as a help or hinder for enhancing body image? 4pm – 6pm, K101, Kimmeridge House

The talk aims to raise will raise awareness of the phenomenon of eating disorders in athletes and regular exercisers.

Wednesday 24 February

Pushing the boundaries – living with and working in mental health, 12.30pm – 1.30pm, BG14, Bournemouth House

Sarah Clark, Occupational Therapist for Dorset HealthCare University Foundation Trust will share her experience of living with an eating disorder complicated by PTSD and childhood trauma, whilst working in a healthcare setting.

Emotions as the backbone to eating disorders, 2pm – 3pm, BG11, Bournemouth House

Holly Chinnery discusses her personal journey of anorexia, bulimia and overeating with the focus on emotional dysregulation.

Meet the Dorset Eating Disorders team, 3pm – 7.45pm, Second Floor, Executive Business Centre

Drop in to meet the local Eating Disorders team led by Dr Ciaran Newell to find out more about the services and support provided by Dorset Healthcare.

Living with a binge eating disorder, 5pm – 6pm, EB206, Executive Business Centre

In a frank interview with Jess Griffiths, Terry Nash will talk about his journey of recovery through his emotional overeating

Normally Abnormal Comedy Gig, 7pm – 10pm, Old Fire Station

Award-winning comic Dave Chawner explores eating disorders, mental health and identity in his new show. This is a free event, with donations collected for the charity Beat.

Thursday 25 February

Why not talk about eating disorders…? 10am – 11am, Student Hall, Talbot Campus and 2.30pm – 3.30pm in BG11, Bournemouth House

Multimedia journalist and BBC producer Sarah Robertson shares her own battles with mental health issues in these free talks.

You can also check out our videos on the BU You Tube channel. The videos are a collection of short films featuring people in Dorset talking about their own lived experience of eating disorders.

There is also a link to the awareness, recovery and hope in eating disorders survey which aims to look at people’s experience to establish whether watching any of these videos has started to change or reinforce existing attitudes towards eating disorders.
