Big Dig 2015 – Open Day

Sunday, 12 July 2015 from 09:00 to 17:00 in Durotriges Big Dig

About the event

As in previous years, the open day will be running from 10-3 with full guided tours of features, finds on display and a mortuary hut open to see a few of the previous inhabitants of the site (not compulsory for the more squeamish of visitors). Parking is, as before, down in the farm (see appended map) where the Sunny Republic brewery will be opening its doors (and selling drinks) and chip shop and bakery will be selling hot food. Toilet facilities are on site and mini buses will be transporting people to and from site, the walk is about 20 minutes through the rolling Dorset countryside.

This year the staff and students of the Faculty have been investigating an prehistoric (Iron Age) settlement with roundhouses, ditches and pits.

You are all cordially invited and please do disseminate this information further amongst friends, relatives and other interested parties. The site will be open and accessible to all ages, abilities and interests.

Directions to the site

The site is at:

North West Farm
West Street
Winterborne Kingston
Dorset
DT11 9AT

The village of Winterborne Kingston is accessed from either the A31 (just north east of Bere Regis) to the south or the A354 from the north. The village itself is (very) small but, at the centre, by the war memorial village hall, is WEST STREET. Join WEST STREET and follow it along out of the village and the second turning on the right (after Stoney Lawn) is signposed:

NORTH WEST FARM
and
SUNNY REPUBLIC BREWERY

Turn into the long drive and, as the road veers left towards the farm yard, the car park will be clearly signposted and there will be DBD staff and students here to meet and greet.

Full ongoing results of the excavation are (and have been) appearing on twitter @Durotrigesdig and Blog diary.
