Abstract: London College of Fashion’s mission, ‘Better Lives’, demonstrates its commitment to improving well-being through the discipline of fashion to drive change, build a sustainable future and improve the way we live. Psychology is the discipline best suited to bringing realising this mission. As psychology, fashion is about people. In a sense, fashion is psychology! Fashion is the 2nd most important global industry in economic terms and its workforce is millions around the world. On a very basic level, we all wear clothes! But it’s not only about what we wear; it’s also about how we design and make garments, manufacture and retail them, how we attract consumers through advertising and marketing, and how we understand consumption and disposal. Because of its influential nature, fashion is the perfect vehicle for making a positive difference at individual, societal and community levels. However there is a lot of work to be done in influencing the fashion industries and its consumers to behave more ethically to enhance well-being and protect the environment. Psychological science can make this happen.
