8th Annual Postgraduate Conference: 9 & 10 March 2016

Wednesday, 9 March to Thursday, 10 March 2016 in The Executive Business Centre

8th Annual Postgrad ConferenceThe Graduate School Conference is an opportunity for postgraduate researchers and postgraduate taught students to showcase their work and promote their research. The conference runs over two days and is open to all of our postgraduate students, as well as academics and other members of BU staff.

Every year, there are several competitions that you can enter, including giving an oral presentation about your work, designing a poster to sum up your research and submitting a photograph that captures the essence of your project.

We also arrange for a number of keynote guest speakers to attend each year, allowing you to hear from people around the UK who are at the forefront of their research field.

Attending the conference is a great opportunity to engage with your fellow postgraduate students and find out more about the exciting and fascinating research that is happening across BU. It is usually held in January each year, but you will be given plenty of time to prepare your exhibit and/or presentation for the conference.

Highlights from the 2015 conference

The 2015 Postgraduate Conference was opened by Professor John Fletcher, Pro Vice-Chancellor – Research & Innovation, and was a great success for all who attended. There were key note addresses from Professor Anthony Hines, Manchester Metropolitan University, and Gill Clarke, UK Council for Graduate Research.

Our postgraduate research and taught students were also heavily involved, with many giving oral presentations about their work, while others created posters to capture the essence of their research.

First prize for the oral presentations went to Ian Chapman, a postgraduate research student with the Faculty of Science & Technology, who described his project: Using flow cytometry as a novel way to monitor our drinking supplies.

Second prize went to Josie Pegg, also a postgraduate research student with the Faculty of Science & Technology, who talked about her thesis: A can of worms: the endangered European eel and its parasites.

Third prize was awarded to Clare Farrance, a postgraduate research student with the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences, who presented on her doctoral research: Tackling the invisible burden of inactivity in older people.
