maiden castleAbout the event

3000 years of ancient monuments on your doorstep. An introduction to just some of the magnificent prehistoric monuments that border the county town of Dorchester. This guided walk will take in some of the most impressive features that have survived beginning with Maiden Castle and also including Lanceborough Barrow, Maumbury Rings and if time allows Poundbury Hillfort. The walk will be taken by John Gale, Senior Lecturer in archaeology and author of ‘Prehistoric Dorset’.

Meet at Maiden Castle car park at 9.30am. Following a short walk (some slopes) from the car park to the earthworks impressive western entrance we will begin a tour around this most impressive of all of Dorset’s prehistoric earthworks ending back down at the car park. Before leaving the car park we will take a short detour to Lanceborough barrow one of the most impressive of the 800 or so Bronze Age Barrows that are found in the vicinity . We will then decamp via own transport to the Dorchester for a guided walk around Maumbury Rings which began life as a Late Neolithic Henge monument before being converted into a Roman amphitheatre.

Walking will be via permissive paths and although there are some inclines the walk is generally easy to moderate. The walk will take approximately 3.5 hours. Please bring a drink and a snack.
